Part 6.a. Track Laying and Wiring

Using some math, check to make sure that curves are smooth, and as broad as possible  Below is a set of measurements for common scales:

N scale:

  • Curve radius, at least 12", preferably more than 18".  Easements recommended.
  • Flex track length, 30"
  • Length of track for a 9 3/4" radius circle (minimum commercial standard): 62"
HO scale:

  • Curve radius, at least 18", preferably more than 24".  Easements recommended.
  • Flex track length, 36"
  • Length of track for an 18" radius circle (minimum commercial standard): 114"
S Scale:

  • Curve radius, at least 21", preferably more than 30".  Easements not needed.
  • Flex track length, 37"
  • Length of track for a 21" radius circle (minimum commercial standard): 132"
O scale trains:

  • Curve radius, at least 16", preferably more than 27".  Easements not needed.
  • Flex track length, 37" or 40"
  • Length of track for a 16" radius circle (minimum commercial standard): 98"
O scale two rail trains:

  • Curve radius, at least 36", preferably more than 40".  Easements recommended.
  • Flex track length, 37"
  • Length of track for a 36" radius circle (minimum commercial standard): 226"
G scale trains:

  • Curve radius, at least 24", preferably more than 48".  Easements recommended.
  • Flex track length, 60" or 72"
  • Length of track for a 24" radius circle (minimum commercial standard): 150"
